12 from CEMC area join Washington
Youth Tour
A dozen high school
students will be heading for one of the world’s most awesome
classrooms this summer as participants in the Washington Youth
Tour. This week-long trip to the nation’s capitol is sponsored by
Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation and other rural
electric cooperatives throughout the United States.
Beginning Friday,
June 12, students from all across the country will explore many of
the historic monuments and tourist destinations of Washington,
D.C., accompanied by co-op employees and school representatives
from their home areas.
To qualify for
the trip, students wrote essays on the theme, “Electric
Cooperatives: Energizing Our Communities.” Winners were determined
by the Austin Peay State University
English department. Besides the incentive of the trip of a
lifetime, paid for by CEMC, the writers of the top three essays
statewide will be awarded college scholarships valued at $1,000,
$2,000 and $3,000 from the Tennessee Electric Cooperative
Association.
