12 from CEMC area join Washington Youth Tour

A dozen high school students will be heading for one of the world’s most awesome classrooms this summer as participants in the Washington Youth Tour. This week-long trip to the nation’s capitol is sponsored by Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation and other rural electric cooperatives throughout the United States.

Beginning Friday, June 12, students from all across the country will explore many of the historic monuments and tourist destinations of Washington, D.C., accompanied by co-op employees and school representatives from their home areas.

To qualify for the trip, students wrote essays on the theme, “Electric Cooperatives: Energizing Our Communities.” Winners were determined by the Austin Peay State University English department. Besides the incentive of the trip of a lifetime, paid for by CEMC, the writers of the top three essays statewide will be awarded college scholarships valued at $1,000, $2,000 and $3,000 from the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association.

The following students from the CEMC service area will be participating in this year’s trip:

• Jamie Edwards, daughter of Jimmy and Charlene Edwards of Clarksville. Jamie attends Cheatham Central High School.

• Katie Fletcher, daughter of John and Julie Fletcher of Adams. Katie attends Jo Byrns High School.

• Angel Gabbard, daughter of Shanda Springer of Pleasant View. Angel attends Sycamore High School.

• Colby Gallahar, son of Scotty and Becky Gallahar of Portland. Colby attends Portland High School.

• Spencer Garrett, son of Larry and Sherry Garrett of White House. Spencer attends White House Heritage High School.

• Hunter Hammock, son of Harry and Tami Hammock of Chapmansboro. Hunter attends Cheatham Central High School.

• Weston Keen, son of Ricky and Kay Keen of Portland. Weston attends Portland High School.

• William Miles, son of Louis Miles of Palmyra and Suzanne Cline of Clarksville. William attends Montgomery Central High School.

• Drew Nash, son of Andy and Emi Nash of White House. Drew attends White House Heritage High School.

• Kristen Switzer, daughter of Russ and Rae Switzer of Dover. Kristen attends Stewart County High School.

• Kelsey White, son of Steve and Sandra White of Greenbrier. Kelsey attends Greenbrier High School.

Accompanying the students and CEMC staff representatives on the tour is Helena Baier, a history teacher at Portland High School.

Some of the sites on this year’s tour are Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson; the Marine Museum at Quantico; a guided tour of the Jefferson, Lincoln, Vietnam, Korean and World War II memorials; Arlington National Cemetery; the Holocaust Museum; Washington National Cathedral; Mt. Vernon, the home of George Washington; and the Smithsonian.

There’s a reason so many past participants in the Washington Youth Tour have described it as “the trip of a lifetime”: It is!
